USDA Ground Observations
Field 42, South 40

Date Comment
April 17, 2001Shaped beds with cultimulcher and applied the herbicides Caparol and Treflan.
April 25, 20013-5PM: Planted Acala NemX cotton, 56,358 seeds/acre. 30" row spacings.
May 1, 2001About 30% emerged.
May 2, 2001Most seedlings emerged.
May 6, 2001First post-plant water application.
May 21, 2001First regular irrigation (every-other-day).
May 25, 2001Started daily irrigations.
May 24, 2001Cultivated (the only cultivation).
June 7, 2001First square.
June 7, 2001Started daily application of nitrogen (UREA UN32), approx. 115 ppm by volume.
June 25, 2001Started deficit irrigation in 42A and 42C (=42AC), applying 18% less water than in 42BD.
June 25, 200147% ground cover.
June 26, 2001First bloom.
July 2, 2001Some areas of 42AC are wilting at 4 PM due to moisture stress.
July 2, 200171% ground cover.
July 2, 200142-2 did not wilt before noon, but was wilting at 4 PM.
July 5, 2001Some very hot weather. Foliage from one row touching that in adjacent row in many areas.
July 10, 200190% ground cover.
July 11, 2001Plants wilting in places in 42AC, but the canopy temperature in the stressed plots is not yet higher than in the control.
July 17, 200142% of available moisture depleted in stressed plots (42AC). Stressed canopy temp is 0.45°C higher than control (not significant).
July 18, 2001Stressed canopy is 0.91°C greater than control, but still not significant at the 5% level of confidence.
July 19, 2001First day in which the average temperature of the stressed canopy is significantly higher than that of the control. Diff = 0.71°C.
July 23, 2001Leaf moisture potential (LMP) in 42-2 is -18.7 bars. Wilting. Needs irrigation. For first time, the CWSI at 2 PM in 42-2 reaches 0.300.
July 24, 200153% of available moisture depleted in 42AC and wilting badly, especially 42-2 (sometimes called plot #2).
July 29, 2001Noticed plot 42-7 not growing well. Canopy temperature is high. small area east of 42-7 is stunted by nematodes (also the start of the eventual fusarium wilt problem).
July 30, 2001From bank of pond can see difference in color (or texture) between stressed and control plots.
July 31, 2001Lots of big bolls, and no bad insects yet. 63% of available soil moisture depleted from stressed plots.
August 2, 2001Do to high variability (breeze?), a difference of 1.79°C in canopy temperature was not significant.
August 3, 2001Last application of UN32.
August 5, 2001Aphids and white fly bad. Fusarium wilt in NE corner of 42D. The fusarium eventually spread to almost all of 42D and 42C, and also occurred in the SE corner of 42A (the sandiest areas). Quite obvious on remote sensing images.
August 8-9, 2001Tried to re-wet stressed plots to start new cycle. Applied 2" of water.
August 17, 2001First boll opened.
August 20, 2001Started cutback in drip watering.
August 24, 2001Plot 42-5 (control) LMP = -18.9 bars, and not wilting (heavy soil). About 41% of available soil moisture depleted, and CWSI = 0.300 (a critical level)
August 29, 2001Lorsban applied by air for aphids and white fly.
September 5, 2001Last water applied.
September 27, 2001First defoliation applied (Ginstar). Bolls are slow to open in 42B. Stressed plots were ready to defoliate on Sept 14.
